Change always turns a part of our lives upside-down! Life always involves change. Sometimes this is great, but there are times when the changes feel enormous and we struggle to adapt to them.
Change can come through personal choice and offers opportunities for new and exciting experiences. Sometimes, it may not be our making, requiring us to cope with and manage difficult feelings. One thing is sure: Change always turns parts of our lives upside-down.
The effort of moving to a new country, adapting to new cultures and languages, and starting a new career or family is enormous. It also goes through phases. Initial excitement and anticipatory nerves can give way to feelings of incompetence, confusion, exhaustion, and frustration.
In the midst of change, less-conscious feelings and past experiences raise their heads and demand attention before we can progress. Moving through these phases in a supported, psychologically informed way makes it much more likely that the changes will be transformative rather than traumatic.
This adaptation process is something that I find personally and professionally fascinating and is the basis of my work.
